Skipping Breakfast: Is It okay?

A Plate Of Food With A Fork And Knife

Breakfast has long been hailed as the most important meal of the day. From childhood, we’ve been told that skipping breakfast is a big no-no and can lead to serious health consequences. And the reality is, that is not true.  For many people, intermittent fasting incorporates the idea of skipping breakfast all the time.  In fact, most of the women I work with have issues with undereating rather than over eating which is the only reason I can think of to encourage yourself to eat breakfast.  But please, do not try to force yourself into an unnatural eating pattern all for folk lore.  Here are some reasons why breakfast can be helpful.

Why is Breakfast Important?

As the word suggests, breakfast literally means “breaking the fast” after a long night’s sleep. Our bodies need fuel in order to function properly, and skipping breakfast can lead to low energy levels, poor concentration, and even weight gain. Eating breakfast kickstarts our metabolism and provides us with the necessary energy to begin our day. However, this breaking fast can come when you are ready for it (for many this is between 11am and 1pm).

I have seen many of my clients in their early weight loss journey skip breakfast to lose weight or worse, force themselves to eat breakfast. While this may seem like a logical approach, it can actually backfire. When we force ourselves to eat when we are not interested we start a cycle of not listening to our bodies and teaching our stomache and brain that it’s “wrong”. That can lead to binging and restricting, which is what I commonly see.  During those time when we don’t eat enough calories per day, our body goes into starvation mode and holds onto fat stores, making weight loss even harder. So, if you are asking, “Is skipping breakfast good for weight loss,” the answer is a resounding I have no idea, that depends on you. That being said, let’s look into the negative effects of calorie defecits.

The Negative Effects of Calorie Deficits

Decreased energy levels:

Without breakfast, our bodies lack the necessary fuel to sustain us throughout the day. This can lead to fatigue and sluggishness, making it difficult to stay focused and productive.

Poor concentration:

Studies have shown that eating breakfast can improve cognitive function and memory performance. Skipping breakfast may result in difficulty concentrating and retaining information.

Increased risk of health issues:

Research has shown that regularly skipping breakfast can improve the risk of developing health issues such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

Overeating later in the day:

When we skip breakfast, we are more likely to overeat later in the day to make up for the missed meal. This can lead to weight gain and other health issues.

If you are interested in making breakfast part of your routine, whether at 5am or 11am, here are some ideas to help you change your behaviors:

Tips for Making Breakfast Part of Your Routine

Plan ahead:

Set aside a few minutes each night to plan and prepare your breakfast for the next day. Make sure to build a healthy relationship with food to help you make better choices.

Keep it simple:

Breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Stick to easy options like oatmeal, yogurt, or a smoothie.

Wake up earlier:

If time is an issue, try waking up just 10-15 minutes earlier to give yourself enough time to eat breakfast.

Get creative with leftovers:

Don’t be afraid to use dinner leftovers for breakfast. Quinoa and roasted vegetables can make for a nutritious morning meal.

Make it portable:

For those busy mornings, have some grab-and-go options like a banana and a protein bar or a hard-boiled egg.

Don’t be afraid of savory breakfasts:

Who says breakfast has to be sweet? Try incorporating some savory options like avocado toast or a breakfast burrito.

Have fun with toppings:

Sprinkle some nuts or seeds on top of your oatmeal, or add some fresh fruit to your yogurt for added flavor and nutrition.

Find what works for you:

Not everyone is a breakfast person, and that’s okay! Experiment with different options until you find what works best for you and your schedule.
