Are your thoughts holding you back?

Handling Weight Loss Anxiety

For a long time, I was held back by my thoughts. Constantly riddled with anxiety, thinking my friends don’t like me, my coworkers hate working with me, and even my boyfriend is tired of spending time with me.I would trap myself in a negative circle of self-loathing, creating negative scenarios in my head. It took me a long time to realize they were false stories narrated by no one but myself.

In fact, I had friends who enjoyed my personality, coworkers who appreciated my work ethic, and a boyfriend who adored me. Why was I letting myself convince my mind that people disliked me? I had to get out of this false and hurtful thought pattern.

According to the University of Michigan, the first step in helping anxiety is recognizing your thoughts. Are the thoughts helpful or not? For me, I found asking myself if the  stories I created in my head were true or not – I discovered that most times, they weren’t.

Looking at the facts, I did not know for certain people were saying negative things about me or that people were actively talking behind my back. I created this false and hurtful world entirely in my head.  It was affecting my every action and I realized it was due to the narrative I had created, not reality.

My next step was to learn how to change the stories I had been telling myself.  By stopping my thoughts in their tracks and questioning the reason behind them, I have been able to come a long way. Instead of assuming the worst-case scenario, I asked myself “What is the real story here, with facts not just feelings?”  My anxiety feels far less detrimental than it has been in a long time because I control my thought direction, which continues to build my self-confidence.

Engaging in active and positive thinking has helped me tremendously on my self-healing journey.  As the experts say, self-awareness and belief in yourself can genuinely take you so far. I encourage you to start questioning your negative thoughts and ask yourself where they are stemming from – does this behavior serve where I am trying to go in my life?
