Top 3 Biggest Myths About Weight Loss

Top 3 Biggest Myths About Weight Loss

Weight loss is a hot topic these days. It seems like everyone is either on a diet, trying to lose weight, or complaining about their weight. With all of this talk about weight loss, it’s no wonder there are so many weight loss myths and facts out there about it. But, the truth is, weight loss doesn’t have to be complicated, and it is very important to learn the facts before you start any type of weight loss plan. To help you separate the myths from the facts, I’ve put together a list of the top five biggest myths about weight loss. So, let’s get started!

Myth 1: You Have to Diet to Lose Weight

This is one of the most common weight loss myths, and it couldn’t be further from the truth. You don’t have to diet to lose weight; you just have to make sure you’re eating the right foods. That means eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. And it also means avoiding processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of alcohol. Maybe consider adding more veggies rather than restricting yourself?  If you make these simple changes to your diet, you will start to see results without having to starve yourself or give up all of your favorite foods.

Myth 2: All Calories are Created Equal

This weight loss and nutrition myths are also very common. People believe that all calories are created equal and as long as they’re under their daily calorie intake, they will lose weight. But, this isn’t true. Just because a food is low in calories doesn’t mean it’s healthy or that it will help you lose weight. In fact, your body metabolizes different types of calories differently and you can eat a low calorie but high inflammatory diet rather easily in America.

For example, a calorie from a piece of cake is going to be processed differently than a calorie from a piece of broccoli. The cake calorie is going to be stored as fat much more easily, while the broccoli calorie will be used for energy more readily. So, when you’re trying to lose weight, it’s important to focus on eating foods that are high in nutrients and low in calories.

I try many mix-and-match recipes at home to get the flavor I’m looking for without all of the extra calories. For example, I love using zucchini noodles in place of pasta or adding cauliflower rice to my regular rice. It may sound strange, but these simple swaps can make a big difference in your weight loss journey. Myth 3: You Have to Exercise for Hours to Lose Weight

Exercise is essential for overall health, but you don’t have to spend hours at the gym to see results. In fact, exercise is more for weight maintenence than for loss. If you do elect to start moving your body, remember you don’t have to do all of your exercises at once. Instead, you can break it up into smaller chunks throughout the day if that’s easier for you.

I usually recommend my patients start with whatever feels right for them, maybe 5 minutes of walking 1 day a week.  Once this become easy and part of your routing you can gradually add in other types of exercise ( like biking, swimming, or strength training) or increase frequency or time of the walking. But just remember, you don’t have to go from zero to 60 in order to see results. Listen to your body and do what feels right for you.
