Why is Losing Weight not the Same as Losing Fat?

When you lose weight, there is no guarantee that you are losing fat. In fact, most people who lose weight through dieting and exercise are actually losing muscle mass and water weight, not fat. It is because muscle is heavier than fat. So, if you lose five pounds of muscle but increase your fat mass, then your body fat percentage will increase even though your total weight has not changed.

If you are trying to lose weight and your primary goal is to have an ideal body weight, then you are likely to be disappointed with your results, no matter how hard you try. However, if your goal is to lose fat, then you can be more optimistic about your chances of success.
