Why You Should Love Hiking

Let's go hiking.

We are so lucky here in Spokane because there are so many trails from which to choose. I could try a new hike every weekend and still not manage to cover every mile. The possibilities are endless and the views are amazing.

When you’re trying to lose weight, workouts can feel daunting or if you are just starting to be active, overwhelming. Many people find themselves dreading a day at the gym or an hour on the treadmill. When you go for a hike, it feels more like a fun activity – rather than a workout.  And you can share your love of the outdoors more easily with family or friends – bonus points!

Spending time outdoors provides me with the opportunity to clear my head, breathe the fresh air and take in nature. There is nothing like stumbling across a family of bunnies or seeing baby birds chirping in their nest.  And it’s so great to be out there with my partner enjoying nature at its finest.

What is so great about hikes is there is always an end goal. I know what I’m getting into before I start – how long it will be, the type of terrain and the amazing views I will get to see. There are many great apps out there to help you decide on the best hike for yourself and my patients and I talk about these during our visits!  Thanks to my patients because helping you get to your goal also helps me decide on my hike for the week.

There is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment when you are done with your hike. It’s almost like a runner’s high. I might feel tired, but I feel like I did something.  My legs hurt, I’m a little out of breath, but I feel good about myself.  Typically, I am in a much better mood because any type of activity increases your “feel good” hormones (like dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine).

I encourage you to think about the type of trail you want to go on. Do you want a reward like a waterfall at the end, do you want to climb up a mountain and see the beautiful view, or do you just want to walk along a flat path and just breathe some fresh air? There is a hiking trail for everyone and EVERY body type.  Invite your family, friends, or fur babies with you on your first adventure – or even your doctor!
