Do Probiotics Help You Lose Weight?

A Healthy Food Kept On A Table

It has been a long-standing question whether probiotics can help women lose weight. Long gone are the days of fad diets and questionable supplements – women are looking for a more natural way to lose those extra pounds. So, could probiotics be the answer? As a holistic nurse practitioner, I believe in the power of natural and sustainable solutions for weight loss. Let’s explore the evidence surrounding probiotics and weight loss to see if they can really help us reach our goals.

Can Probiotics Really Help You Lose Weight?

The short answer is we don’t really know. Probiotics for weight loss can be beneficial but it is not consistently proven in peer-reviewed research. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that interact with your gut’s microbiome, which has been linked to obesity and other weight-related issues. It works by increasing the number of “good” bacteria in the gut, which can help reduce inflammation and promote a healthy balance in the gut. This could result in weight loss by decreasing appetite, speeding up metabolism, and improving digestion.  The problem is we have no real research on testing the gut biome and what to treat with.

Some studies have shown that women who take a daily probiotic supplement may experience a decrease in their body weight and fat mass, as well as an increase in their lean muscle mass. Additionally, research suggests that probiotics can help improve your gut flora and support the breakdown of food, which may help you lose weight over time.  In theory, this could also help with some of the signaling from hormones secreted by your intestinal tracn, like GLP-1 (think ozempic), GIP (manjova), PPK-1, cholystykinen, ghrelin, and leptin, to name a few.

It is important to note that probiotics alone are not a magic weight-loss pill. Probiotics can be used in conjunction with other lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. By following the best weight loss diet plan for women, you will be able to lose weight in a sustainable way. Lastly, it’s important to remember that individual results may vary and that it is always a good idea to speak with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement routine.
