6 Habits to Help You Lose Weight

6 Habits to Help You Lose Weight

Losing weight is an all-too-familiar goal for many people. But achieving it can be easier said than done. And one such challenge is forming healthy habits that can help one reach their weight loss goals. So if you’re looking to shed a few pounds, let me give you a head start by introducing six healthy habits that can help you along the way. This way, you can learn to make better lifestyle choices and set yourself up for success. Let’s get started!

Habit 1: Maintain a healthy relationship with food

Developing a healthy relationship with food is crucial for sustainable weight loss. Learn to enjoy the flavors, textures, and experience of eating without feeling guilty. Practice mindful eating and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. If you are feeling overly hungry, make sure to nourish your body with a healthy snack or meal. This way, you can still enjoy the foods that you love and stay on track with your weight loss goals.

Habit 2: Incorporate high-quality protein into your diet

When considering healthy eating habits to lose weight, incorporating high-quality protein in every meal is essential. Protein-rich foods like lean meat, fish, and legumes will help you feel full for longer, reducing cravings and binge eating. You can also include healthy protein shakes or bars into your diet for a quick, nutritious snack. Proteins such as nuts, seeds, beans, and tempeh add a high-fiber boost that helps manage your blood sugars as well.  I always recommend making sure that you and high-protein snack readily available for you at any time, whether in your car, at the office, or in your cupboards at home, having easy to access ready to go snacks can help you stay eating the food you wanted to when you are wanting to eat something quick.

Habit 3: Keep yourself hydrated

Drinking enough water throughout the day is one of the best habits for weight loss. Proper hydration can boost your metabolism, and it’s also essential for optimal body functions, supporting weight loss efforts. I always recommend my patients drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. This will help ensure that your body is adequately hydrated and functioning well.

In case you don’t like the taste of water, try adding a few slices of lemon or lime to your glass for a refreshing twist.

Habit 4: Prioritize sleep

A good night’s sleep is crucial for overall health, and it also plays a significant role in weight management. Lack of quality sleep can lead to hormonal imbalances, causing stress and poor food choices. It can further increase cravings for unhealthy foods and lead to emotional eating.

So prioritize sleep by creating a bedtime routine and ensure you get 7-9 hours of sleep every night. It’s also important to limit exposure to any type of blue light two hours before bed and establish a sleep-friendly environment for a restful night’s sleep.  At least five hours of sleep is integral to help manage your hunger hormones!

Habit 5: Manage your stress levels

Stress management is vital for weight loss. Uncontrolled stress can cause overeating, emotional eating, and a lack of motivation to exercise. It can further lead to increased cortisol levels, a hormone associated with weight gain. To manage stress, practice breathing, and meditation techniques or try a yoga session to relax your mind. You can also incorporate physical activities like walking or swimming into your routine.  Understanding your attachment style will also help you understand how and why you reach for food instead of others.  Learning how to address and confront conflict in a loving, healthy way is one of the best ways to reduce your stress.

Habit 6: Stay consistent with physical activity

Consistent physical activity is vital for both weight loss and maintaining a healthy body. It not only helps burn calories but also boosts your mood and energy levels. Engage in activities that you enjoy, such as walking, cycling, or even joining a dance class, making it easier to stick to your fitness routine. You could even plan a weekend hike with your friends or family for some fun and exercise!  Remember it’s not about I was at the gym, it’s about consistently doing what you love as many days as you can.
