The Surprising Carbs That Can Help You Lose Weight

Food With Healthy Carbs

Are you trying to lose weight but can’t seem to give up your favorite carb-loaded foods? What if I told you that not all carbs are created equal, and some may actually help you reach your weight loss goals? Yes, you read that right. In this blog post, we’ll be discussing the carbs that can help your lose weight and how they can benefit your overall health. So, put down that low-carb diet plan (Keto, I am looking at you) and keep reading to find out which carbs you should be adding to your plate.

The Importance of Carbs in a Healthy Diet

When it comes to weight loss, carbs often get a bad reputation. Many popular diets promote cutting out carbs altogether or severely restricting them. However, carbohydrates are an essential nutrient that our bodies need for energy and overall health.

Carbs are the body’s main source of fuel, providing us with energy to carry out daily activities and exercise. They also play a vital role in brain function and are necessary for the production of hormones and enzymes. Without enough carbs, our bodies may resort to breaking down protein for energy, which can lead to muscle loss and promote fat gain. Some carbs contain high amounts of fiber and unsaturated fat that is super important to decrease your risk of many chronic illnesses, like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease to name a few.  So, if you are looking for the best weight loss diet plan for women, remember that cutting out all carbs may not be the answer. Try incorporating everything in moderation but focusing on the right kinds of carbs.

The Difference Between Good and Bad Carbs

Not all carbs are created equal, and the key to incorporating them into a healthy diet is choosing the right kinds. “Good” carbs refer to complex carbohydrates that are high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. These include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. On the other hand, “bad” carbs are simple carbohydrates that have been processed and stripped of their nutrients. These include sugary drinks, baked goods, and refined grains like white bread and pasta. However, I like to think of carbs on a continuum, such that our good carbs are less inflammatory and bad carbs are more inflammatory.  The less you contribute to your inflammation (since most people with weight issues have chronic inflammation), the easier it will be to decrease fat tissue.

Carbs You Should Be Eating to Lose Weight

Now that we understand the importance of carbs in a healthy diet and the difference between inflammation in regards to carbs, let’s dive into the specific carbs you should be eating to lose weight.

  • Oats: Oats are high in fiber and contain beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber that has been shown to aid in weight loss by increasing feelings of fullness and reducing appetite.
  • Quinoa: This ancient grain is not only a great source of complex carbs but also contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. It’s also high in fiber and has been linked to increased feelings of fullness and improved blood sugar control.
  • Sweet Potatoes: These root vegetables are packed with nutrients and have a lower glycemic index than white potatoes, meaning they won’t cause spikes in blood sugar levels. They are also high in fiber and can help keep you feeling full for longer.
  • Berries: Not all carbs have to be starchy. Berries, such as blueberries and strawberries, are low in calories but high in fiber, making them a great option for satisfying sweet cravings without derailing weight loss efforts.
  • Legumes: Beans, lentils, and peas are all excellent sources of complex carbs, fiber, and protein. They can help keep you full while also providing essential nutrients for overall health.
  • Non-Starchy Vegetables: Non-starchy vegetables, such as leafy greens, broccoli, and cauliflower, are low in calories but high in fiber and essential vitamins and minerals. They are a great option for adding volume to meals without adding excess calories.
  • Whole Grain Bread and Pasta: Contrary to popular belief, not all bread and pasta are bad for weight loss. Choosing whole grain options, which are higher in fiber and nutrients, can actually aid in weight loss by keeping you feeling full and satisfied.
