5 Tips to Sticking to Your Diet During the Holidays

5 Tips to Sticking to Your Diet During the Holidays

I know how challenging it is to stick to your diet, especially during the holidays.  It’s that time of year when you’re surrounded by seemingly never-ending tasty food, alcohol and sweets. But with the right mindset and helpful tips, you can set yourself up for success this yuletide season.

1. Plan Ahead

Set yourself up! If it’s a potluck-style event, you can volunteer to bring an appetizer or a healthy side! Everyone likes a fun, creative salad or a veggie tray. Many others are on the same weight loss cruise as you or genuinely appreciate something fresh and healthy during the season of heavy and rich dishes.

2. Stick to Low-Calorie Drinks

Alcohol is the easiest way to break your diet. Unfortunately, most drinks are loaded with sugars (simple carbohydrates). I recommend enjoying your festive drinks, but alternating with a glass of water in between or setting a limit of how many you’d like to take in for the night.  This helps you stick to your diet and will stop you from getting an inevitable hangover if you go past your limit. (You’re welcome in advance.)

3. Go On a Walk in the Morning

Get those steps in, girl! Check out my blog on why walking is the best workout and you will see all the reasons I love walking so much! This is especially great for the holiday season because it’s a workout that can take any amount of time you want and it is something you can do anywhere with anyone. All you have to do is bundle up and just take the time to do it.

4. Watch Your Portion Sizes

I don’t know about you, but I’m someone who likes a little bit of everything. But a lot of the time, I find my plate so full. So I try to grab extra of what I love and only a bite-size of something I want to try.  It’s also important to remember we’re not little kids at the dinner table – you don’t need to finish everything on your plate. Eat what you want, but listen to yourself when you’re full.

5. Enjoy Yourself

This is the most important step of them all. It’s the holidays – you’re supposed to have fun! So if you decide a day is just a bust and you are going to indulge and enjoy yourself, just do it. I want you to feel good about yourself.  If that means a second piece of pumpkin pie, go for it. Give the gift of joy through food to yourself this holiday season.
