Does Birth Control Make You Gain Weight?

A Pregnant Women Holding Digital Glass Weighing Machine

Most women are on some form of birth control at some point in their lives. Whether it is for contraception, to help regulate periods, or to clear up acne.  Birth control is a popular method of treatment for many women in America. However, one of the most common questions that many women have is whether birth control makes them gain weight. Unfortunately, this concern is often perpetuated by the media and popular culture, which can lead to a lot of confusion. But don’t worry; I will be discussing the research on this topic so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not birth control is right for you.

The Science of Birth Control and Weight Gain

Birth control has been a hot topic of debate for many years and there is still a lot of research being done on the subject. However, the current consensus is that most types of birth control do not lead to weight gain. This is because the hormones in birth control pills work by preventing ovulation, which means that there is no change in hormone levels that could lead to weight gain. So, you may use almost any type of birth control, including the pill, patch, or ring, without worrying about gaining weight. The only type of birth control associated with weight gain and that is the depoprevera shot.  PLEASE AVOID this medication if weight is an issues for you.

Most of the time, side effects I do see for most women with birth control are more related to mental health issues.  For example, I see a lot of women who struggle with the Nexplanon due to mood swings for the first 3-6 months of having this implant.  This can improve over time and does for most women.  I always recommend more localized options, like the ring or IUD as you won’t get the systemic release of hormones that can trigger PCOS or worsening of mental health issues, like anxiety and depression.  This is much more of a concern for me than weight gain that many women are NOT advised about.

I would recommend you visit a gynecologist or midwife to get a more professional and personalized answer. Along with this, it will also help if you check out tips for creating a birth plan so that you can be more prepared if you are ready to start a family. Remember that being informed is always the best way to make decisions about your health!

What Are the Other Factors That Can Lead to Weight Gain?

Many other factors can lead to weight gain, and it is important to be aware of these so that you can make the necessary changes to your lifestyle. Some of these factors include:

  1. A sedentary lifestyle: getting more than 150 minutes of moderate movement per week is recommended, so about 50 minutes 3 times a week
  2. Poor diet: Eating too much inflammatory or processed food
  3. Stress: due to increased cortisol that triggers your fat tissue to replicate and eating comfort foods that may increase inflammation
  4. Hormones: Hormonal changes can lead to weight gain, especially during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.
  5. Medications: Some medications can lead to weight gain, such as steroids, antidepressants, and beta blockers.
  6. Genetics: family history, health conditions, mental health disorders, cancer

What Can You Do to Prevent Weight Gain?

If you are concerned about weight gain and be it for any reason, there are some things that you can do to prevent it. Some of these tips include:

1. Move Regularly

Getting regular exercise is one of the best things that you can do to prevent weight gain. Exercise helps to increase your metabolism and burn calories. It also helps to reduce stress, which can lead to overeating. It’s recommended to get 30 minutes of heavy or 50 minutes of moderate exercise 3 times a week.

  • Taking a brisk walk
  • Jogging or running
  • Playing tennis or another sport
  • Going to the gym

Exercise is also essential for maintaining a healthy weight, NOT losing weight. If you are already at a healthy weight, exercise can help to prevent weight gain.

2. Consult a Doctor

If you are concerned about weight gain, it is important to consult a doctor. I would recommend visiting a holistic doctor who specializes in women’s health and weight loss. This is because we can provide you with personalized advice based on your unique situation.

We can also help to identify any underlying health conditions that may be contributing to weight gain as well as recommend the best treatment options. Moreover, our approach is always holistic, which means that we focus on your overall health and well-being, not just your weight.

3. Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet is another crucial thing you can do to prevent weight gain. A healthy diet includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Limiting your intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and alcohol is also important. A holistic approach to nutrition is always the best approach. This means that we focus on eating whole, nutrient-rich foods that will help to improve your overall health, but incorporating your culture and heritage.
