5 Tips for Making Healthy Choices at a Restaurant

A Woman Eating A Burger And French Fries

Who doesn’t love dining out? The convenience of having someone else cook and clean up is an appealing prospect for many. However, eating at restaurants can often be a challenge when trying to make healthy choices. With tempting menu items, large portion sizes, and hidden calories, it’s easy to derail your healthy eating habits.

But fear not! With a few simple tips, you can still enjoy dining out while making healthy choices. I have compiled a list of 5 tips to help you make healthier choices at a restaurant.

1. Look for Healthy Options

When browsing the menu, look for dishes that are labeled as “light” or “healthy.” These dishes are usually lower in calories and fat compared to other menu items. You can also choose lean protein options such as chicken, fish, or tofu. Avoid dishes that are fried or creamy, as they tend to be higher in calories and unhealthy fats.

You could also try asking the server for recommendations on healthier options. Moreover, many times, the restaurant may have a separate menu for healthier options or would accommodate your request for modifications to make the dish healthier.

2. Load Up on Veggies

Vegetables are an incredible source of nutrients and fiber, so try to build healthy relationships with food by including them in your meals. Look for dishes that are packed with veggies, or order a side of steamed or grilled vegetables. You can also request to replace sides like fries or mashed potatoes with a salad or steamed vegetables. By incorporating more veggies into your meal, you’ll feel fuller and more satisfied without overindulging in less healthy options.

3. Watch Your Portions

Restaurant portions are notoriously large, and it’s easy to overeat when faced with a plate piled high with food. Remember to listen to your body’s hunger cues and stop eating when you feel satisfied rather than finishing everything on your plate. This way, you can enjoy your meal without overeating.   When I am done eating I also like to place a napkin over my food so I don’t mindlessly eat while I am waiting for the check or my partner.  You can also ask for a to-go box before starting your meal and pack up half of it to take home for later.

4. Be Mindful of Beverages

Calories from beverages can add up quickly, so it’s essential to be mindful of what you’re drinking. Opt for water or unsweetened tea instead of sugary drinks like soda or cocktails. If you do choose an alcoholic beverage, limit yourself to one and avoid high-calorie mixers. You could also try asking for a glass of water with your drink to stay hydrated and prevent overindulging.

5. Indulge in Moderation

Eating out should be an enjoyable experience, so don’t feel guilty about indulging once in a while. Instead of depriving yourself completely, give yourself permission to enjoy a small portion of your favorite dish or dessert. Savor every bite and pay attention to how it makes you feel. Eating mindfully can help prevent overindulging and promote a healthy relationship with food.

The Bottom Line

I know how challenging it can be to make healthy choices at a restaurant, but with a little preparation and mindfulness, it is possible. By following the above-mentioned tips, eating healthy at restaurants can be enjoyable as you dine out. Remember to listen to your body’s hunger cues, ask for what you want, and don’t be afraid to indulge in moderation.
