3 Types of Eaters: Who Do You Relate to?

Fat Woman Eating A Sandwich
When it comes to eating, we all have unique habits, preferences, and quirks. From the way we eat our food to the types of food we choose, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to nourishing our bodies. But have you ever stopped to consider what type of eater you are? I’m sure there’s a specific type that you can relate to! We all have our own unique set of eating habits that can be classified into categories that can further help us understand our bodies and how we respond to different types of food. This can help you make more informed decisions about the food you choose to include in your diet. So without further ado, let’s explore the different types of eaters and see which one you relate to!

1 .The Fast Eater

We all know someone who’s a speedy eater. They’re the type of people who chow down their food in record time and never take a break. If you’re the type of person who can’t help but eat fast, it’s important to remember that rushing through meals can cause you to miss out on the pleasure of eating and feeling the signals to tell your body it’s full. Slowing down and taking your time can help you enjoy each bite as well as give your body time to register fullness. You may also check out the guide to mindful eating to learn more about savoring your food and eating with intention. It is important to note that when you eat fast, it is more likely that you will overeat due to the fact that it takes your body time to register fullness.

2. The Stress Eater

Stress can be a powerful motivator when it comes to eating. If you find yourself reaching for unhealthy snacks whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, chances are that you’re a stress eater. While it’s okay to indulge in a treat every once in a while, mindless snacking can quickly become a habit that leads to an unhealthy relationship with food.  Often, your attachment style corelates to using food as a soothing mechanism.  Insecure and disorganized attachment styles tend to use food to sooth rather than relationships with others.  You learn this in childhood and throughout your growing experiences as an adults as well. To avoid emotional eating, to practice mindful eating and take the time to recognize when you’re actually hungry or if it is just stress making you reach for snacks. Recognizing your attachment style and knowing your triggers is an important part of this process.  You could also munch on healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, or granola bars instead of relying on processed food. Other relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation can also help you cope with stress in a healthier way, along with learning how to manage conflict.

3. The Picky Eater

If you’re the type of person who’s been stuck in their food rut for years, chances are you’re a picky eater. Eating the same types of foods can be convenient, but it’s important to remember that your body needs a variety of nutrients found in different types of food.  Often my clients will not know what to eat so they stick to the foods they know are “okay” for them to eat or are too scared to try something else for fear of gaining weight. If you’re feeling stuck and need some inspiration, try experimenting with new recipes, cuisines, or even food combinations. Start with smaller steps, such as including a few new ingredients or dishes into your weekly meal plan, and slowly increase from there. If you still find it difficult to try new foods, you could ask a friend or family member who loves cooking, take a cooking class, or see a dietician or weight loss (obesity) medicine specialist.
